Abstract
This article analyzes the national liberation movement that emerged in Central Asia in the early 20th century, with a particular focus on the life and activities of one of its prominent leaders, Madaminbek. Although often portrayed as part of the Basmachi movement—a term used during the colonial period to delegitimize anti-Soviet resistance—this study argues, based on historical sources, that it was in fact a genuine struggle for national independence. Furthermore, it examines his significant contribution to the formation and evolution of the independence movement in the Fergana Valley. The analysis offers a nuanced understanding of the socio-political dynamics of the period and sheds light on the broader context of anti-colonial resistance in the region.
